On any given month, approximately 600 units of blood or blood products are used at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. Accident victims, people undergoing surgery and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or other diseases, such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia, all utilize and are reliant on blood donors.

Less than five percent of healthy Americans eligible to donate blood, actually donate each year. If everyone that donates once a year would donate twice a year our blood supplies would not get to dangerously low levels. According to studies, 1 out of every 10 patients admitted into the hospital will need some type of blood product during their stay. That’s a lot of blood usage with not many blood donors to go around. A donor can only donate a unit of blood every 8 weeks, and a unit can be utilized for only 42 days. Since there is no way to artificially manufacture blood or blood products Our Lady of Lourdes Blood Bank relies on volunteer blood donors to meet their patient’s needs.

Scheduling your blood donation is a time-effective benefit to you. Appointments enable us to staff appropriately for the expected number of blood donors. Proportionate staffing translates into less time waiting for assistance and more time for your other important duties.
